Paracheirodon simulans
Also known as: Green Neon Tetra, False Neon Tetra
Origin: Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela (blackwater tributaries)
Paracheirodon simulans, the Green Neon Tetra, is the smallest of the three Paracheirodon tetras and is found in blackwater tributaries of the Negro, Orinoco, and upper Orinoco. Its vivid turquoise-green iridescent stripe runs nearly the full body length with only a subtle reddish patch below. It demands consistently warm, very soft, acidic blackwater conditions but rewards care with spectacular group dynamics.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 4.5–6.5, very soft blackwater essential; RO or rain water recommended. Tank: 40 L minimum; blackwater setup with tannins, dark substrate and dim lighting. Feeding: Micro-pellets, baby brine shrimp nauplii, micro-worms and infusoria. Behaviour: Peaceful schooling species; keep 12+ for best colour and schooling behaviour. Compatibility: Only other blackwater nano species — small pencilfish, dwarf rasboras, small corydoras.
