Paracheirodon simulans
Also known as: Green Neon Tetra, False Neon Tetra
Origin: Upper Rio Negro and Orinoco tributaries, Venezuela and adjacent Brazil

The Green Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon simulans) is the third and rarest member of the Paracheirodon trio alongside the Neon Tetra (P. innesi) and Cardinal Tetra (P. axelrodi). Native to the upper tributaries of the Rio Negro and Orinoco River systems in Venezuela and adjacent Brazil, it inhabits some of the most extreme blackwater environments in South America — water that is nearly pure acid, with pH values as low as 3.5–4.5 and virtually zero mineral content.
The Green Neon Tetra is smaller than both its congeners, reaching only 2–3 cm. The iridescent stripe is distinctly more green-turquoise than the electric blue of the Neon Tetra, giving a more intensely emerald appearance. The red coloration extends further across the body than in the Neon but less far than in the Cardinal Tetra.
In the wild, P. simulans forms enormous schools of thousands of individuals in blackwater forest streams with dense leaf litter, submerged roots, and minimal light penetration. The extreme softness and acidity of their natural habitat make them sensitive to standard aquarium water conditions — they require more exacting care than either the Neon or Cardinal Tetra.
For aquarists willing to provide appropriate conditions — extremely soft, acidic blackwater — the Green Neon Tetra is extraordinarily rewarding, displaying more intense coloration and livelier schooling behavior than its better-known relatives.
Green Neon Tetras demand authentic blackwater conditions: pH 4.0–6.5, extremely soft water (0–4 dGH), and temperatures 26–30°C. Achieving these conditions typically requires RO water or very soft tap water, tannin supplementation through driftwood and Indian almond leaves, and peat filtration. Standard tap water in most areas is too hard and alkaline.
A minimum 40-liter aquarium is suitable for a group of 15–20. Create a true blackwater environment: dark substrate (black sand), driftwood, extensive dried botanicals, Indian almond leaves, and dim lighting filtered through floating plants. Water should be amber-brown from tannins.
Feed micro-sized foods appropriate for their tiny mouths: nano pellets, baby brine shrimp nauplii, micro worms, daphnia, and infusoria. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily, ensuring food is small enough to be ingested by fish under 3 cm.
Green Neon Tetras are fragile and must only be kept with species that tolerate the same extreme blackwater conditions: other Paracheirodon species, small Apistogramma cichlids, small Corydoras, and small Boraras. Avoid hard-water species that would require incompatible water parameters.
Keep in groups of at least 15–20. Acclimate new fish very slowly (drip acclimation over 2+ hours) as sudden parameter changes are lethal. Maintain consistent parameters through small, frequent water changes (15–20% twice weekly with temperature-matched RO water).
