Hemiancistrus subviridis
Also known as: Green Phantom Pleco, L200, Green Phantom
Origin: Rio Orinoco, Venezuela
Hemiancistrus subviridis, the Green Phantom Pleco (L200), is one of the most beautifully coloured loricariids available in the aquarium hobby. Its olive-green to emerald-green body is densely covered with fine yellow-white spots, and its dorsal and caudal fins are edged with vivid yellow to gold margins that intensify under strong lighting. It originates from the warm, rocky, fast-flowing reaches of the upper Rio Orinoco in Venezuela.
In the aquarium the Green Phantom requires strong water movement, excellent oxygenation, and warm temperatures of 26–30°C. It needs a tank of at least 180 L with smooth rocks, caves, and driftwood. Its omnivorous diet should include sinking algae wafers, Repashy gel foods, blanched vegetables, and occasional bloodworms or brine shrimp. Good diet quality directly affects the intensity of its green colouration.
The Green Phantom is relatively peaceful toward other species and is one of the more community-compatible medium-large plecos. Males may show mild territorial behaviour toward each other but pose no serious threat to dissimilar tankmates. It is regularly bred in captivity by dedicated hobbyists.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft to moderately hard; very strong flow and excellent oxygenation required. Tank: Minimum 180 L; smooth boulders, slate ledges, caves, driftwood; avoid sharp substrates. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, Repashy, blanched courgette and spinach, bloodworms, brine shrimp. Breeding: Cave spawner; achievable in well-maintained setups with stable warm water and good flow. Compatibility: Peaceful with community fish; mild territorial behaviour between males near caves.
