Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Green Snakeskin Discus, Snakeskin Green Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, Brazil)
The Green Snakeskin Discus bridges the wild green discus aesthetic with the patterning complexity of the domestic snakeskin lineage. Its emerald-to-olive-green base colour is overlaid with the characteristic snakeskin reticulation, giving each scale a defined presence within the overall pattern.
The green pigmentation in this strain is partially dietary — carotenoid and spirulina-enriched foods help sustain the brightness and saturation of the green tones. Warm, soft, tannin-stained water that approximates a blackwater environment brings out the deepest colour and sharpest reticulation.
A group of Green Snakeskin in a heavily planted Amazon biotope with cardinal tetras and rummynose tetras creates one of the most naturalistic yet spectacular freshwater displays possible.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (1-8 dGH), KH 0-4; tannin-stained water enhances green pigment. Tank: Minimum 250 L, planted Amazon style, warm indirect lighting, fine dark substrate. Feeding: Spirulina and carotenoid-enriched pellets, beefheart, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, artemia. Breeding: Open spawner; snakeskin heritable; stable 30°C pair tank with vertical spawning slate. Compatibility: Peaceful with other discus strains, cardinal tetras, and non-aggressive Amazon community fish.
