Tetraodon nigroviridis
Origin: Southeast Asia
Tetraodon nigroviridis, the Green Spotted Puffer, is a charismatic and highly interactive puffer fish. Its bright green body dotted with bold black spots is iconic. Despite being sold as freshwater, it requires brackish conditions (SG 1.005–1.015) as an adult — juvenile fish tolerate fresh water but slowly decline without some salinity. Extremely intelligent and personable; it recognises its keeper and hunts snails, shellfish, and hard-shelled foods. Best kept in a species-only brackish setup.
Brackish water required as adults (SG 1.005–1.015). Temperature 24–28 °C. Feed snails, frozen shrimp, cockle, mussel — hard foods wear down continuously-growing teeth. Species only tank — highly aggressive with other fish. Provide enrichment (varied décor, varied foods).
