Andinoacara rivulatus
Also known as: Green Terror, Gold Saum Green Terror, White Saum Green Terror
Origin: Coastal Pacific slope rivers of Ecuador and Peru

The Green Terror (Andinoacara rivulatus) is native to the coastal rivers of Ecuador and Peru along the Pacific slope, inhabiting fast-flowing river systems with rocky substrates and moderate to strong current. It is closely related to the Electric Blue Acara (Andinoacara pulcher) but grows substantially larger and displays more aggressive territorial behavior.
Adult males are extraordinary in appearance: the entire body is covered with intricate iridescent blue-green to teal scales overlaid with gold highlights, creating a shimmering mosaic pattern. The head and cheeks display intense metallic blue-green iridescence. Males develop a distinctive nuchal hump (cranial lump) as they mature, adding to their impressive profile. Females are smaller and less intensely colored. Two color varieties exist in the hobby: 'Gold Saum' (gold-edged fins) and 'White Saum' (white/silver-edged fins).
Green Terrors are large cichlids, with males regularly reaching 25–30 cm in aquariums. They are highly territorial and aggressive, particularly during breeding. Despite their 'terror' reputation, they can coexist peacefully with appropriately matched tankmates in large setups when given sufficient territory.
They are bi-parental substrate spawners that clean a spawning site vigorously and defend their territory and brood aggressively against all perceived threats.
Green Terrors require large aquariums — a minimum of 300 liters for a single adult, with 400–500 liters needed for a bonded breeding pair or community of large cichlids. Decorate with large rocks, driftwood, and robust decor. Plants will likely be uprooted during breeding preparation and territory defense.
Maintain soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water: pH 6.5–8.0, hardness 5–20 dGH, and temperatures 22–27°C. They are adaptable but show best health and coloration in clean, well-filtered water. High-quality filtration with regular 30–40% weekly water changes is essential.
Feed quality large cichlid pellets, sticks, and regular supplements of substantial live or frozen foods: large earthworms, prawns, mussels, and fish fillets. Varied protein-rich diet maintains the intense iridescent coloration.
Green Terrors are compatible only with other large, robust fish: large cichlids (Oscars, Severums, large South/Central American cichlids), large armored catfish, and large robust species that can hold their own. Never house with smaller fish that will be bullied or consumed, or with smaller cichlids that will be overwhelmed.
Males are particularly aggressive toward each other and toward their mate outside of spawning condition. Provide maximum tank size and complex territory structures to reduce aggression. Pair bonds are best established by growing a group of juveniles together and allowing natural pairing.
