Herichthys carpintis
Also known as: Green Texas Cichlid, Lowland Cichlid, Carpinte Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Herichthys carpintis is found in Atlantic-slope rivers of northeastern Mexico, including the Panuco and Tamesi drainages. It is very closely related to the Texas Cichlid but generally displays more intense and extensive iridescent green-turquoise spotting. Aquarium populations have existed for decades and the species breeds readily in captivity. Like its relative, it is a substrate-digger and plant-destroyer with an assertive temperament.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard (GH 10–22). Tank: 350L+ for adults; robust decor; sandy substrate for digging; strong filtration. Feeding: Omnivore; cichlid pellets, large frozen foods, earthworms, and occasional vegetable matter. Behaviour: Aggressive; similar to Texas Cichlid; pairs defend spawning sites and fry with intensity. Compatibility: Best with other robust Central American cichlids of similar size and temperament.
