Apolemichthys griffisi
Origin: Central Pacific, Marshall Islands, Kiribati
The Griffis Angelfish (Apolemichthys griffisi) is one of the most stately and rarely encountered large angelfish in the marine hobby, found in deep reef habitats of the remote Central Pacific — primarily the Marshall Islands and Kiribati. Its elegant coloration is immediately striking: a clean white body is offset by a jet-black dorsal region and posterior half, with a contrasting bright yellow caudal fin completing a tuxedo-like pattern that is both sophisticated and dramatic. Due to its deep-water origin, limited collection range, and significant logistics involved in export, it appears very infrequently in the trade and commands a substantial premium when available. A crown jewel for the most dedicated large angel collectors with the space to house it properly.
Requires a minimum 600-liter mature FOWLR aquarium with extensive live rock and excellent water quality. Being a deepwater species, it benefits from somewhat subdued lighting compared to typical tropical reef setups. Feed a broad diet of sponge-enriched angel formulas, frozen mysis, marine flake, and spirulina daily. Can be semi-aggressive toward other large angels; keep singly or with very different species in a very large system. Pristine, stable water quality is essential for long-term success.
