Dichotomyctere nigroviridis
Also known as: Chao Phraya Green Spotted Puffer, Thai GSP, Green Spotted Puffer (Chao Phraya)
Origin: Chao Phraya River basin, Thailand
This Chao Phraya River form of Dichotomyctere nigroviridis is distinguished by a noticeably deeper, more saturated green background colouration and more widely spaced, clearly defined spots compared to typical Malaysian or Vietnamese import stock. Juveniles can be maintained in low-end freshwater but adults require progressively increasing salinity to remain healthy, ultimately thriving at SG 1.005–1.008. The Chao Phraya form is occasionally available from Thai specialist exporters and is prized by collectors who appreciate locality-specific puffer variation. Care requirements are identical to the standard green spotted puffer: a brackish tank, regular hard prey, and solitary housing to prevent aggression-related injuries.
Water: Juveniles freshwater; adults brackish SG 1.005–1.008; pH 7.5–8.0; temperature 24–28°C. Tank: 80 L per adult; sand substrate, rock and wood décor tolerant of salt; robust filtration. Feeding: Snails, mussels, clams, krill; hard-shelled prey several times weekly; beak watch important. Breeding: Not reliably bred in captivity; seasonal brackish spawner. Compatibility: Solitary adult; extreme fin-nipper; no tankmates recommended.
