Parachromis motaguensis
Also known as: Guapote Tigre, Motaguense Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Parachromis motaguensis is native to the Motagua river drainage of Guatemala and Honduras, one of the major Central American river systems. It reaches 40 cm and displays a bold pattern of dark spots and rosettes on a gold to cream background, resembling a smaller Jaguar Cichlid. Like all Parachromis, it is a piscivore of formidable aggression that demands large tanks, heavy filtration, and experienced management. It is a robust and long-lived showpiece species.
Water: 24–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard (GH 10–20). Tank: 600L+ for adults; minimal decor; extremely powerful filtration essential. Feeding: Carnivore; large cichlid pellets, whole fish, large earthworms, and crustaceans. Behaviour: Highly aggressive piscivore; must be housed alone or as a carefully managed pair. Compatibility: Species-only; do not house with fish small enough to be prey.
