Chromidotilapia guntheri
Also known as: Guenther's Cichlid, Gunther's Cichlid
Origin: West Africa (Ghana, Cameroon)
Chromidotilapia guntheri is one of the largest and most commonly available Chromidotilapia species, practising a form of biparental mouthbrooding where both male and female share incubation duties. It is a sturdy, adaptable species that tolerates a moderate range of water conditions and makes an excellent centrepiece fish for a West African biotope.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 4–15). Tank: Minimum 150L; open sandy areas combined with caves and robust planting. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, earthworms, large frozen invertebrates, and occasionally plant matter. Behaviour: Biparental mouthbrooder; parents take turns incubating eggs in the mouth; defensive when brooding. Compatibility: Works with large West African tetras, distichodus, and similarly sized robust cichlids.
