Euchilichthys guentheri
Also known as: Guenther's Euchilichthys, Congo Flat-head Catfish
Origin: Congo River rapids
Euchilichthys guentheri is a specialised rheophilic mochokid from the Congo River rapids zone, possessing a distinctively broad, flattened head and a well-developed oral disc that functions as a powerful suction cup on smooth rock surfaces. Its body form reflects an extreme adaptation to high-energy riverine environments where water velocity would dislodge less specialised fish instantly.
In the aquarium it is one of the more demanding mochokids, requiring very high flow rates, excellent oxygenation and a smooth rocky substrate over which it can continuously graze. Once established in a suitable setup it is a robust and long-lived species that provides a fascinating window into the ecology of one of the world's most unique river systems.
It is rarely available in the trade and should be prioritised as a specialist acquisition, with appropriate quarantine and acclimatisation protocols applied rigorously.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 4–14, KH 2–8); exceptional oxygenation required. Tank: 100 L minimum; very high-flow powerheads; smooth basalt, granite or slate rocks; minimal substrate. Feeding: Algae wafers, spirulina tabs, blanched vegetables placed on rock surfaces; avoid exclusively meaty diet. Breeding: Not documented in captivity; extremely unlikely in home aquariums. Compatibility: Peaceful; strictly rheophile setup required; cannot be mixed with standard community or low-flow species.
