Mesonoemacheilus guentheri is an attractive and moderately active stream loach from the river systems of India's Deccan Plateau, characterised by regular rows of dark oval blotches along its flank and a warm golden-tan base colour. It inhabits clear, flowing streams with rocky or gravelly substrate and adapts well to aquariums with gentle to moderate current. An accessible species for hobbyists interested in South Indian river biotopes.
Water: 20-26°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard, gentle to moderate flow. Tank: Minimum 60 L, smooth rounded pebbles and sand, driftwood caves. Feeding: Sinking micro-pellets, frozen daphnia, tubifex, blanched vegetables. Behaviour: Active daytime bottom dweller; perches openly on flat rocks. Compatibility: Peaceful; good with other Indian stream fish and similar-sized community species.
