Guianacara sphenozona
Also known as: Wedgespot Cichlid, Guianacara
Origin: South America (Guyana, Venezuela, Suriname)
Guianacara sphenozona is found in blackwater and clearwater rivers of Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela. Its most striking feature is a large, wedge-shaped dark blotch on the upper flank. Males develop a slight nuchal hump and more intense colouration at maturity. A relatively peaceful species for its size, it can be maintained in soft to moderately hard water, broadening its appeal among intermediate cichlid keepers.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, GH 2-12, KH 0-5; adaptable across a moderate water chemistry range. Tank: 120L minimum; driftwood, caves, and open sandy areas for natural behaviour. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts pellets, frozen bloodworms, and earthworms readily. Behaviour: Generally peaceful but territorial during breeding; pairs share spawning duties. Compatibility: Suitable with medium-sized tetras, peaceful catfish, and similar-sized cichlids.
