Arothron meleagris
Also known as: Guinea Fowl Puffer, Spotted Puffer
Origin: Indo-Pacific and Eastern Pacific (reefs)
Arothron meleagris is distributed across the Indo-Pacific and the Eastern Pacific coast, occurring in two colour forms: the standard white-spotted dark form and a rare yellow form from the Eastern Pacific. It forages on coral polyps, sponges, and hard invertebrates in reef environments. Like all Arothron, it is incompatible with reef aquaria but makes a hardy and personable resident in large FOWLR systems.
Water: 24–26°C, pH 8.1–8.4, SG 1.020–1.025; stable, high-quality marine water essential. Tank: Minimum 600 L; open sandy substrate with large rocks and robust fish-only decor. Feeding: Clams, cockles, squid, mussels, hard frozen marine foods; feed every other day. Behaviour: Hardy and curious; less aggressive than some Arothron but will destroy coral and invertebrates. Compatibility: FOWLR only; compatible with large, robust fish; reef systems incompatible.
