Polypterus ansorgii
Also known as: Guinean Bichir, Ansorgii Bichir
Origin: Africa
Polypterus ansorgii is a slender, olive-toned bichir native to the coastal drainage rivers of West Africa. It remains less well known in the hobby than most other Polypterus species and is infrequently imported. Its calm, undemanding nature and manageable adult size make it a rewarding species for the dedicated polypterid keeper.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard water. Tank: Minimum 250L, sandy substrate, driftwood shelter zones, well-sealed lid. Feeding: Carnivore; live worms, frozen prawn and bloodworm, sinking carnivore pellets. Behaviour: Peaceful and retiring; nocturnal and rarely seen during daylight hours. Compatibility: Suitable with other medium to large peaceful species; avoid very small fish.
