About

The Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) originates from the freshwater streams and rivers of northeastern South America — particularly Trinidad, Venezuela, Barbados, and Guyana — where wild-type males display modest but attractive spotting patterns compared to the extravagant ornamental forms developed by breeders. Since being introduced to the aquarium hobby in the early 1900s, guppies have been selectively bred into hundreds of recognized strains with dramatically varied tail shapes (veil, delta, sword, lyretail, fantail, moscow) and color patterns (solid, multi-color, cobra, tuxedo, metal, and countless others).

Males are significantly more ornate than females: smaller (3–4 cm) with elaborate, flowing fins and vivid coloration. Females are larger (5–6 cm), drabber, and robust. As livebearers, females give birth to fully-formed fry after a 4-6 week gestation period — the species' prolific breeding capacity earned it the nickname 'Millionsfish.'

Fancy Guppies are among the hardiest and most adaptable aquarium fish, tolerating a remarkably wide range of water conditions. Their combination of beauty, ease of care, peaceful temperament, and fascinating breeding behavior makes them perennial favorites across all skill levels of fishkeeping.

The 'Male Fancy Mix' represents a selection of multiple male guppy strains offered together, providing a colorful display of varied tail and body patterns within a single school.

Care Guide

Fancy Guppies are very adaptable: pH 6.8–8.5, hardness 8–25 dGH, and temperatures 22–28°C. Slightly hard, neutral to alkaline water produces the best health and fin development. They tolerate some aquarium salt (1–2 tsp per 10L) and do well in slightly brackish conditions.

A minimum 40-liter aquarium suits a small group well. Dense plantings (Guppy Grass, Hornwort, Java moss) provide cover for females and fry. Good filtration is important but current should be gentle — strong flow can damage delicate fins and stress the fish. Sponge filtration prevents fry loss.

Feed varied, high-quality foods: flake food as a staple, supplemented with micro pellets, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, micro worms, and occasional vegetable flakes or spirulina. Varied diet enhances coloration and breeding condition.

Guppies are entirely peaceful toward most species but males have extravagant fins that attract fin-nippers. Avoid nippy species (tiger barbs, serpae tetras, some barbs). Compatible tankmates include corydoras, small tetras, small rasboras, mollies, platies, and small peaceful loaches.

Female guppies are under constant breeding pressure from males — maintain at least 2–3 females per male to distribute attention, or keep males-only tanks for display. Breeding is prolific; provide plants for fry cover or manage population appropriately.
