Poecilia reticulata var.
Also known as: Tuxedo Red Guppy, Red Tuxedo Guppy
Origin: Central America / Caribbean
The Tuxedo Red Guppy is a classic fancy strain of Poecilia reticulata characterized by the 'tuxedo' genetic trait, which produces a bold contrast between a dark (black or dark blue) anterior body and a brilliantly colored posterior — in this variety, a vivid red to orange-red on the caudal peduncle and tail fin. The tuxedo pattern is one of the oldest and most recognized guppy strain characteristics, named for its resemblance to a formal tuxedo suit.
Male Tuxedo Red Guppies are small but visually striking, with the dramatic color contrast drawing the eye immediately. The tail fin is typically large — often a fan, delta, or veil shape — extending the vivid red coloration and maximizing display surface. Females are larger and less colorful, as typical for the species.
Like all fancy guppy strains, the Tuxedo Red is a product of selective breeding from wild Poecilia reticulata populations. It shares the hardy, adaptable nature of the species, tolerating a wide range of water conditions and readily reproducing in the aquarium. It is one of the most widely available and popular guppy varieties worldwide. The Tuxedo Red coloration is produced by a combination of the tuxedo gene (controlling the dark anterior pigmentation) and separate red color genes affecting the posterior body and fins. Understanding this genetic architecture is part of what makes fancy guppy breeding intellectually engaging — hobbyists can predict offspring ratios and color outcomes with considerable precision by understanding the underlying genetics.
Tank Setup A 40-liter or larger planted tank. Dense planting with fine-leaved plants for fry cover. Gentle filtration — protect filter intake with pre-filter sponge. Heater at 22–28°C. Secure lid. Avoid aggressive tankmates that nip at the large tail fin.
Water Parameters pH 6.5–8.5, temperature 22–28°C. Adaptable to wide hardness range. Prefer slightly hard, neutral to alkaline conditions. Weekly 25–30% water changes.
Feeding Omnivorous. Flake food, micro pellets, frozen daphnia, baby brine shrimp, spirulina flakes. Varied diet enhances red coloration. Feed two to three times daily in small amounts.
Sex Ratio Maintain 1 male to 2–3 females minimum. Male harassment of females is constant — more females distribute this pressure and keep females healthier.
Reproduction Highly prolific livebearer. Females give birth to 20–60 live fry every 4–6 weeks. In planted tanks, some fry survive naturally. Separate fry to a nursery tank for best survival if raising them intentionally.
Fin Protection The large tuxedo fan tail is vulnerable to fin-nipping. Never keep with tiger barbs, serpae tetras, or other known fin-nippers.
Tankmates Small, peaceful community fish: small tetras, corydoras, small loaches, snails, and shrimp (with adults — fry may be eaten by shrimp). Avoid large or aggressive fish.
Health Notes Hardy and adaptable. Watch for velvet in new arrivals. Wasting from internal parasites occurs in some commercial stock — source quality fish and quarantine thoroughly.
Long-term Notes Tuxedo Red Guppies kept in appropriate conditions and well-fed on a varied diet maintain excellent color vibrancy throughout their 2-year lifespan. The Tuxedo pattern tends to express most boldly in the middle-aged male, between 6 months and 18 months, with color often intensifying during peak health condition and reproductive activity. The large fan tail of the Tuxedo Red Guppy is particularly susceptible to fin-nipping — inspect fins weekly and remove any tankmate showing persistent nipping behavior immediately to prevent chronic fin damage and infection.
