About

The Yellow Dragon Guppy is a fancy Poecilia reticulata variety that combines two desirable genetic traits: yellow base coloration and the 'dragon scale' trait, which produces an expanded iridophore coverage giving the body scales a thick, metallic, armored appearance reminiscent of dragon scales. The result is a male with a golden-yellow metallic body sheen combined with a striking large tail fin in matching yellow, orange, or yellow-and-black combinations depending on the specific line.

Dragon scale guppies are a relatively modern development in the hobby, with the trait valued for the unique metallic texture it imparts to the scales. The yellow dragon combination produces particularly vivid, sun-like coloration that stands out dramatically against dark substrates or green planted backgrounds. Dragon scale guppies may occasionally develop compressed eyes (a trait associated with the dragon scale gene in some lines) — this is a health concern that reputable breeders work to eliminate through selective breeding.

In all behavioral and husbandry aspects, the Yellow Dragon Guppy is identical to other fancy Poecilia reticulata varieties: peaceful, social, prolific, hardy, and adaptable. Its extraordinary appearance combined with beginner-level care requirements makes it one of the most compelling fancy guppy varieties available. The interaction between the yellow base coloration genes and the dragon scale metallic overlay in the Yellow Dragon Guppy produces a particularly rich, warm golden iridescence that changes subtly depending on viewing angle and lighting spectrum. Under full-spectrum daylight-type LED lighting, the metallic quality is most pronounced; under warmer, lower-color-temperature lighting, the yellow warmth of the base coloration predominates.

Care Guide

Tank Setup A 40-liter planted aquarium is ideal. Dark substrate enhances yellow and metallic colors by contrast. Dense planting for fry cover, open mid-water swimming space. Gentle filtration with pre-filter sponge on intake. Heater at 22–28°C. Secure lid to prevent jumping.

Water Parameters pH 6.5–8.5, temperature 22–28°C. Adaptable to wide hardness range. Slightly hard, neutral to alkaline water is ideal. Weekly 25–30% water changes.

Feeding Omnivorous. High-quality flake and micro pellets, frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, and spirulina-based color foods to enhance yellow pigmentation. Feed small amounts two to three times daily.

Dragon Scale Trait Monitoring Inspect eyes regularly — the dragon scale gene in some lines is linked to compressed or abnormal eye development (microphthalmia). Purchase from reputable breeders who select against this trait. Affected fish with visibly compressed eyes should not be bred.

Sex Ratio 1 male to 2–3 females is recommended. Surplus males compete constantly in attractive displays but should not overstress females.

Reproduction Prolific livebearer. Dense planted tanks allow fry survival. Separate for intentional rearing. Population management planning is advised.

Tankmates Small, peaceful community fish. Avoid fin-nippers and large aggressive species. Compatible with corydoras, small tetras, and snails.

Health Notes Generally very hardy. Monitor for velvet, internal parasites, and eye health in dragon scale individuals.

Long-term Notes Yellow Dragon Guppies, like all fancy guppies, have a lifespan of approximately 2 years under good conditions. Careful monitoring of eye development in dragon scale individuals is an ongoing responsibility throughout their lifespan. Selecting broodstock from individuals without eye compression issues and breeding only the healthiest specimens gradually improves the line's overall health and longevity. Provide full-spectrum aquarium lighting to display the dragon scale metallic coloration at its most impressive — under warm incandescent-type lighting the metallic quality is less visible and the fish appear simply yellow rather than metallically golden.
