Gymnogeophagus balzanii
Origin: Paraná-Paraguay basin, South America
Gymnogeophagus balzanii is a fascinating eartheater cichlid from the Parana-Paraguay river system of subtropical South America, notable for the pronounced nuchal hump that develops in breeding males and gives them a dramatically heroic profile. The body is a warm olive-tan with blue iridescent flecks and a prominent dark lateral spot that varies in intensity with mood. This species is a true mouthbrooder and one of the hardier Gymnogeophagus species, tolerating cooler subtropical temperatures that many tropical cichlids cannot handle.
House in a spacious aquarium (minimum 280 L) with a fine sand substrate that allows natural sifting behavior. Maintain pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 20–26°C, moderate hardness. Feed a varied omnivorous diet: quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, Artemia, and sinking wafers. Pairs will form bond and breed in a cave or open substrate. Keep with peaceful, similarly-sized tankmates; males can be mildly territorial during spawning.
