Gymnogeophagus labiatus
Origin: Uruguay and southern Brazil
Gymnogeophagus labiatus is a distinctive Gymnogeophagus from Uruguay and southern Brazil, recognized by its thick, prominently fleshy lips and an attractive body pattern of blue iridescent scales over a golden-tan base with red-orange banding on the flanks. The unusual lip morphology is a natural adaptation for extracting invertebrates from hard rocky substrates in fast-flowing streams. This cool-water tolerant species is ideal for subtropical setups and can even be maintained in unheated aquariums in temperate climates.
House in a spacious aquarium (minimum 250 L) with a sandy to gravel substrate, rocks for shelter, and moderate to strong water flow that mimics its riverine habitat. Maintain pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 18–25°C, moderate hardness. Feed varied omnivorous foods: quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, Artemia, and sinking wafers. Keep as a pair or trio with peaceful, medium-sized tankmates. Males may be mildly territorial; provide visual barriers.
