About

Gymnogeophagus rhabdotus is a slender, horizontally striped eartheater native to the rivers of Uruguay, northern Argentina, and southern Brazil. Its cool temperature tolerance makes it one of the few cichlids suitable for unheated aquariums in temperate climates. Hardy and adaptable, it suits beginner South American cichlid keepers.

Care Guide

Water: 18-26°C, pH 6.5-7.8, tolerates moderately hard water. Tank: Minimum 180L, fine sand or smooth gravel, minimal décor. Feeding: Quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, earthworms; accepts most dry foods. Behaviour: Peaceful; mild territorial behaviour during spawning only. Compatibility: Excellent with other subtropical South American fish and livebearers.
