Crenicichla hadrostigma
Also known as: Hadrostigma Pike Cichlid, Large-spot Pike Cichlid, Upper Paraná Pike Cichlid
Origin: Upper Rio Paraná basin, Brazil
Crenicichla hadrostigma is a distinctive pike cichlid from the upper Rio Paraná basin, described from specimens collected in the headwater systems of Mato Grosso do Sul. The species name references the 'hadrós' (large) 'stígma' (blotch) — a single large, clearly defined dark marking at the mid-flank that serves as a bold diagnostic feature against the pale silver body.
In the wild C. hadrostigma inhabits medium-to-large rivers with sandy and rocky substrate, often in areas of moderate flow. The aquarium should replicate this: 250 litres with a sandy base, smooth rounded rocks, and driftwood. Water parameters should reflect the slightly harder, more neutral conditions of the Paraná drainage rather than the soft blackwater conditions required by Amazonian relatives.
This is a moderately large pike cichlid reaching 25 cm, making it a substantial display fish in a species aquarium. Feeding is uncomplicated — frozen carnivore foods and quality pellets are eagerly accepted. The species has been bred in captivity following standard Crenicichla cave-spawning protocols.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5 at 20–26°C; moderate hardness (up to 15 dGH) acceptable. Tank: 250 L with sandy substrate, smooth rocks, driftwood, and clear open swimming areas. Feeding: Frozen prawn, mussel, fish strips, earthworm; pellets accepted readily. Breeding: Cave spawner; biparental care; temperature fluctuation between 22–26°C may assist conditioning. Compatibility: Paraná biotope with large robust cichlids or as a species pair.
