Farlowella hahni
Also known as: Hahn's Twig Catfish, Orinoco Twig Catfish
Origin: South America (Venezuela — Orinoco drainage)
Farlowella hahni is native to tributaries of the Orinoco in Venezuela, with a preference for slow to moderately flowing blackwater and clearwater rivers with abundant submerged wood. It is identified by its characteristic dark saddle-like markings spaced along its dorsal surface, which break up its silhouette when resting among twig and branch debris on the river bottom.
In the aquarium, this species follows the typical Farlowella husbandry requirements of mature, soft water conditions with plentiful driftwood. It is a shy species upon introduction and may not accept food for the first few days, relying on the biofilm naturally present on wood surfaces. Patience during the acclimation period is key to long-term success.
Farlowella hahni has been bred in captivity with some regularity and is one of the more rewarding Farlowella to attempt to breed. The male develops pronounced cheek bristles during breeding condition and will guard egg clusters laid on smooth stones or broad plant leaves.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft (GH 2–10); tannin-stained blackwater conditions ideal. Tank: 100 L minimum; dark substrate, driftwood, floating plants to diffuse light. Feeding: Algae wafers, spirulina, blanched courgette; biofilm on wood critically important. Breeding: Male develops cheek odontodes in breeding condition; guards flat-surface egg clutch. Compatibility: Peaceful community only; Orinoco biotope with pencilfish, small tetras ideal.
