Monotrete barbatus
Also known as: Hairy Puffer, Spiny Puffer
Origin: Southeast Asia (Thailand, Indochina)
Monotrete barbatus features small spine-like dermal projections distributed across its body that give it a distinctly rough, hairy texture unlike any other puffer species commonly available. It is found in slowly flowing and still waters of Southeast Asia among leaf litter and submerged roots. The spiny texture provides camouflage among detritus as it waits in ambush for invertebrate prey.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard; tannin-rich blackwater conditions appreciated. Tank: Minimum 120 L; deep leaf litter, driftwood, and dense root systems replicate natural habitat. Feeding: Live or frozen invertebrates, snails, bloodworm, and earthworm pieces. Behaviour: Cryptic ambush predator; less overtly aggressive than other puffers but will ambush tankmates. Compatibility: Species-only; highly cryptic — solo housing prevents ambush attacks on other inhabitants.
