Hemisynodontis membranaceus
Also known as: Halfbanded Hemisynodontis, Membranous Catfish, Filter-feeding Squeaker
Origin: West Africa (Nile to Senegal)
Hemisynodontis membranaceus is unique within the family Mochokidae for its feeding strategy: its enormously developed upper lip membrane acts as a plankton-filtering organ, allowing the fish to cruise near the water surface or mid-water straining zooplankton and fine organic particles rather than feeding from the substrate like most mochokids. It is native to large river systems from Senegal to the Nile.
In the aquarium it is a large, active species demanding very spacious tanks and excellent filtration. It accepts fine-particle and powdered foods distributed throughout the water column as well as standard sinking foods, but performs best when offered foods that remain in suspension for extended periods. Its unusual feeding anatomy makes it unmistakable among aquarium catfish.
This species is occasionally available in the trade and represents a genuinely rare opportunity to maintain one of the most behaviourally unusual mochokids.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.5–8.0, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–18, KH 2–12). Tank: 600 L minimum; open mid-water swimming space; strong circulation to keep fine foods in suspension. Feeding: Powdered foods, fine frozen foods distributed mid-water, large sinking pellets; feed multiple times daily in small amounts. Breeding: Not documented in captivity; presumed open-water spawner given its ecology. Compatibility: Peaceful with large robust fish; avoid very small species; unusual feeding behaviour means competition for surface foods.
