Dermogenys pusilla
Also known as: Halfbeak, Wrestling Halfbeak (misnomer), Silver Halfbeak
Origin: Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaysia)
Dermogenys pusilla is a surface-dwelling livebearer found in coastal freshwater and brackish streams of Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Its characteristically extended lower jaw (beak) is used for surface skimming of insect prey. It thrives in groups and is visually arresting when viewed from the side in well-lit tanks.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard; small addition of marine salt optional. Tank: 60L minimum, long shallow tank preferred, tight lid — strong jumpers. Feeding: Omnivore — surface floating foods: fruit flies, artemia, bloodworm, small pellets. Behaviour: Peaceful in groups; males may spar briefly with jaw-locking. Compatibility: Compatible with other peaceful mid- and surface-level fish.
