Betta splendens
Also known as: Halfmoon Betta, Betta, Siamese Fighting Fish
Origin: Southeast Asia
The halfmoon betta is the pinnacle of long-fin selective breeding, with a caudal fin that opens to an exact half-circle when the fish flares. Males display brilliant iridescent colouration across the body and fins. They are best kept alone or in carefully managed community setups with non-nippy tank mates.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — use a heater and avoid temperature swings. Tank: minimum 20L, heavily planted with plenty of cover and resting spots near the surface. Feeding: betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp — feed small amounts twice daily. Behaviour: males are highly territorial — keep one male per tank at all times. Compatibility: avoid fin-nippers; peaceful bottom dwellers and small tetras are suitable companions.
