Betta splendens
Also known as: HMPK, Halfmoon Plakat, Plakat Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
The halfmoon plakat is considered by many betta connoisseurs to be the ideal combination of show quality and physical robustness. Its short, wide-spreading tail is less prone to fin damage than long-fin varieties, while still delivering a spectacular flare. HMPKs are active swimmers and command high prices at shows.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — consistent water quality is critical. Tank: minimum 20L with a tight-fitting lid; HMPKs are agile jumpers. Feeding: carnivore — betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, mosquito larvae; feed twice daily. Behaviour: males are highly aggressive to conspecifics — one male per tank only. Compatibility: compatible with peaceful community fish that do not nip fins.
