Lasiancistrus sp. (L079)
Also known as: Hammerhead Pleco, L079 Pleco, Broad-snout Pleco
Origin: Venezuela
The Hammerhead Pleco (L079) is a distinctive and robust loricariid from Venezuelan rivers, immediately recognisable by its unusually broad, flattened snout that gives the fish a hammer-like profile. This head shape is an adaptation for feeding on biofilm and algae from flat rock surfaces in its native high-flow environment. The body is attractively marked with pale spots on a dark background.
L079 is primarily herbivorous and benefits from abundant flat rockwork and driftwood surfaces for natural grazing behaviour. Supplement the diet with spirulina wafers, algae pellets, and blanched vegetables. The species requires good water flow and warm conditions to remain healthy and active. Strong filtration and weekly water changes are important maintenance requirements.
The Hammerhead Pleco is generally peaceful and makes a good community fish for larger aquariums. It can be territorial with conspecifics and should have a dedicated cave or rock crevice as its home territory. Compatible with medium to large South American fish including cichlids, larger tetras, and other robust species.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 25–29°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8; moderate to strong flow essential. Tank: 200 L minimum; flat rocks, driftwood, caves, moderate to strong current. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina wafers, algae pellets, blanched vegetables, biofilm from flat surfaces. Breeding: Cave or rock crevice spawner; rarely achieved in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful with most species; territorial with conspecifics over preferred surfaces.
