Haplochromis sp. 'Bicolor 500'
Also known as: Bicolor 500 Victorian, Black and Yellow Victorian
Origin: Lake Victoria, East Africa
Haplochromis sp. 'Bicolor 500' is an undescribed Victorian haplochromine known for exceptionally clean two-tone colouration in dominant males: the upper body and dorsal fin are deep black, while the lower flanks, belly, and anal fin grade into vivid yellow or gold. The numerical suffix in the trade name has no formal taxonomic significance but distinguishes this form from other bicoloured Victorian cichlids. The striking graphical pattern makes it immediately recognisable and highly desirable.
Care and behaviour follow typical Victorian haplochromine patterns. Males are aggressive toward rivals and should be given ample rockwork to define and defend territories. The harem arrangement — one male, multiple females — is strongly recommended to distribute male attention and reduce female stress. Maternal mouthbrooding females are best isolated briefly after releasing fry if fry survival is a priority.
A varied diet maintaining both plant and animal components is essential for long-term health and colour retention. Hard alkaline water mirroring Lake Victoria conditions should be maintained consistently.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 7.0-8.5, moderately hard alkaline; 25% changes weekly. Tank: 150L minimum; significant rockwork with multiple territory zones. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, spirulina, frozen invertebrates; varied diet preserves colour. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; female holds ~3 weeks; easy in captivity. Compatibility: Victorian community; only one male of this species per tank.
