Haplochromis sp. 'Blue Neon'
Also known as: Blue Neon Victorian, Neon Victorian Cichlid
Origin: Lake Victoria, East Africa
Haplochromis sp. 'Blue Neon' is an undescribed Victorian haplochromine notable for the exceptional intensity of its blue iridescence in adult males. The blue is not uniform but shimmers and shifts with the angle of light, creating a neon-like effect rarely matched among freshwater fish. The species likely originates from rocky shorelines in the Tanzanian or Kenyan portion of Lake Victoria, though precise collection data varies.
Blue Neon males are moderately aggressive and will establish territories among rocks, displaying prominently to both rivals and females. The species is a maternal mouthbrooder and breeds readily once a hierarchy is established in a well-structured aquarium. Females are inconspicuous silver-grey, making the contrast with displaying males especially pronounced.
This species is ideal for aquarists who want the visual impact of a marine fish in a freshwater Victorian setup. Its care requirements are well within the reach of intermediate aquarists familiar with cichlid keeping.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 7.0-8.5, hard alkaline; strict water change schedule. Tank: 150L+; good quality lighting to showcase iridescence; ample rockwork. Feeding: Quality cichlid pellets, spirulina, mysis shrimp; colour-enhancing foods boost iridescence. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; standard Victorian protocol. Compatibility: Victorian community; keep with visually distinct species to reduce male competition.
