Haplotaxodon microlepis
Also known as: Haplotaxodon, Microlepis Haplotaxodon
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
The Haplotaxodon is a highly unusual and rarely available deep-water cichlid from Lake Tanganyika, occupying the pelagic zone at considerable depth. It possesses unique anatomical adaptations for open-water life and is almost never seen in the trade. It is a true collector's species requiring expert-level care and a very large, well-maintained aquarium.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; very stable deep-water conditions; avoid temperature swings. Tank: Minimum 400L; open water column, minimal decor, excellent oxygenation. Feeding: Pelagic diet of frozen krill, mysis, and high-quality sinking pellets; feed small amounts frequently. Behaviour: Relatively peaceful for a large cichlid; best in species group or with other large, peaceful deep-water Tanganyikans. Compatibility: Advanced Tanganyika specialist tank; not for general community aquaria.
