Serranus tigrinus
Origin: Caribbean, Bermuda, Western Atlantic
The Harlequin Bass (Serranus tigrinus) is a brilliantly patterned small serranid bass from the Caribbean and tropical Western Atlantic, displaying a striking creamy-white body covered in bold dark-brown to black irregular blotches that form a dramatic harlequin pattern. A simultaneous hermaphrodite like all Serranus species, it can function as either male or female and pairs may breed in captivity. Despite being a natural predator of small fish and crustaceans, it is completely reef-safe with stony corals, soft corals, and anemones — an unusual combination that makes it suitable for Caribbean-themed FOWLR and reef systems with appropriately sized tank mates. Its bold patterning and active, curious behavior make it a distinctive and entertaining aquarium resident.
Provide at least 250 liters with abundant live rock for hunting territory and shelter. Do not combine with nano fish, small gobies, or ornamental shrimp — they will be eaten. Feed with frozen mysis, chopped marine shrimp, krill, and meaty marine preparations twice daily. Generally reef-safe with corals. Compatible with similarly sized or larger robust fish. Bold and interactive; settles quickly in established systems.
