Puntius sophore (commonly called the Hash Mark or Spotfin Barb) is widely distributed across the river systems of India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. Its common name refers to the series of short, distinct vertical dark dashes — resembling typographic hash marks — arranged along the flanks. It is a highly adaptable and resilient species, tolerating a wide range of water conditions, and makes an excellent and peaceful community fish.
Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 5–15); wide tolerance. Tank: 100 L minimum; planted aquarium with open swimming space. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts flake, pellets, algae wafers, and frozen foods readily. Behaviour: Peaceful active schooler; keep in groups of 6+; tolerates a range of tankmates. Compatibility: Excellent with other peaceful cyprinids, tetras, and corydoras.
