Gasteropelecus sternicla
Origin: Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America
Gasteropelecus sternicla, the Silver Hatchetfish, is an unusual and beautiful surface-dwelling characin from the Amazon basin. Its distinctive hatchet-shaped body — created by a massively enlarged, keel-like sternum housing powerful flight muscles — allows it to leap from the water and briefly glide to escape predators. In tanks it skims just below the surface, darting to catch surface-fallen food. A peaceful community fish that must be kept in schools of 6+ and requires floating plant cover. Extremely jump-prone; a tight lid is mandatory.
Tight-fitting lid essential — will jump through tiny gaps. Floating plant cover (frogbit, Salvinia). Temperature 23–27 °C, soft slightly acidic water. Feed floating micro-pellets, fruit flies, live insect larvae. Groups of 6+. Sensitive to water quality changes.
