Hemigrammus ocellifer
Origin: Amazon basin, South America
The Head and Taillight Tetra (Hemigrammus ocellifer) is a popular and long-established aquarium fish from the Amazon, named for two prominent reflective golden spots — one behind the eye and one at the caudal peduncle — that resemble the front and rear lights of a car. It is a robust, undemanding species that tolerates a wide range of water conditions and thrives in community aquariums alongside other peaceful fish. Its cheerful, active nature and ease of care have made it an enduring hobby favourite across Belgium and Europe.
House in groups of at least 6–8 in a well-planted aquarium (minimum 60 L). Maintain pH 5.5–7.5, temperature 22–28°C, soft to moderately hard water. Feed quality flake, micro-pellets, and occasional frozen Artemia or Daphnia. Compatible with most peaceful community species: other tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and small livebearers. Very adaptable — an excellent choice for beginners.
