Blood Parrot hybrid (Amphilophus × Vieja)
Also known as: Heart-Shaped Blood Parrot, Heart Parrot Cichlid, Valentine Parrot
Origin: Captive bred (hybrid)
The Heart-Shaped Blood Parrot is produced through selective breeding for a body profile that, when viewed head-on or from above, resembles a heart shape due to the exaggerated curvature of the dorsal profile and the compressed lateral depth. This makes it a popular gift fish and novelty item in Asian markets where the heart shape carries symbolic significance.
The fish retains all the qualities of the standard Blood Parrot — vivid orange-red colouration, interactive personality, and moderate temperament — while presenting the unique body shape as an additional talking point. Health outcomes depend heavily on the degree of body modification: fish with extreme modifications may be more susceptible to swim bladder issues.
For aquarists purchasing Heart-Shaped Blood Parrots, sourcing from reputable breeders who prioritise health over extreme body modification is strongly recommended. When well-bred, these fish live healthy, active lives comparable to standard Blood Parrots.
Water: 25–30°C, pH 6.5–7.5; excellent water quality important for fish with modified body forms. Tank: Minimum 150L; avoid strong currents that may challenge less streamlined body shapes. Feeding: Omnivore; medium pellets sized for the partially fused mouth; varied diet of frozen and prepared foods. Breeding: Males infertile; females may spawn; body shape trait is heritable in selective breeding programs. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; suitable with medium-large fish; avoid fin-nippers and overly boisterous species.
