Symphysodon discus × S. aequifasciatus (hybrid)
Origin: Captive bred
The Heckel Cross discus is produced by crossing the wild Symphysodon discus (Heckel discus) with quality captive-bred strains, retaining the distinctive bold dark central vertical bar that is the signature of the Heckel discus while gaining improved coloration, patterning, and hardiness from the captive parent. Highly regarded in European discus circles for its genetic diversity and natural character, it bridges the gap between wild Heckel aesthetics and captive-bred manageability. Limited availability ensures it remains a premium item.
Maintain warm, soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–7.0, GH 1–8, KH 0–4) at 28–31°C. Perform frequent partial water changes (25–30% every 2–3 days). Feed high-quality discus-specific foods: frozen bloodworm, beef heart, and high-protein discus pellets. Keep in groups of 6 or more to reduce aggression and stress. Provide tall plants and driftwood for cover and a sense of security.
