Geophagus sp. 'Heckel Red Head'
Also known as: Heckel Red Head Eartheater, Rio Negro Red Head Eartheater
Origin: Brazil (upper Rio Negro tributaries)
Geophagus sp. 'Heckel Red Head' is among the most visually spectacular undescribed eartheaters in the hobby. Collected from clear-to-blackwater tributaries of the upper Rio Negro in Amazonas state, Brazil, it features a deep orange-red wash across the entire head and operculum that contrasts dramatically with turquoise iridescent flank scaling. The species appears closely related to the altifrons/dicrozoster group but differs in this distinctive head colouration. It is highly sensitive to water quality, requiring very soft, warm, and acidic conditions typical of the Rio Negro. Fine-sand substrate at least 6 cm deep is essential. Best maintained in a dedicated species group or with other peaceful soft-water cichlids. A delayed mouthbrooder; spawning groups benefit from stable conditions and excellent nutrition.
Water: Very soft; pH 4.5–6.5, temperature 26–30 °C, very low conductivity. Tank: 250 L+; deep fine sand, tannin-stained water, driftwood. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen artemia, daphnia, bloodworm, and varied live foods. Breeding: Delayed mouthbrooder; requires stable, pristine water for successful spawning. Compatibility: Best with other Rio Negro soft-water species; avoid robust or nippy tankmates.
