Heckeli Pike Cichlid

Crenicichla heckeli is a large, powerful pike cichlid from the Rio Negro and Uaupés river system of Brazil and Colombia. Inhabiting the archetypal tea-dark blackwaters of the Rio Negro, it is exquisitely adapted to the extremely soft, acidic, nutrient-poor conditions of this iconic Amazon tributary. Its torpedo-shaped body, wide gape, and large caudal fin make it an exceptionally efficient open-water predator.

Keeping C. heckeli successfully requires rigorous replication of Rio Negro conditions: pH 4.5–6.0, near-zero hardness, warm temperatures of 26–28°C, and heavy tannin staining. RO water with controlled blackwater additives is mandatory. The tank must be large — at least 400 litres for a single specimen — and decorated with floating leaf litter, submerged roots, driftwood, and no bright lighting.

This species is rarely exported and commands premium pricing when available. It is not a beginner's pike cichlid — strict water quality, large prey items, and an enormous tank are non-negotiable. However, for the dedicated large-predator enthusiast, maintaining C. heckeli in a proper Rio Negro biotope is a uniquely rewarding experience.

Water: Extremely soft, very acidic (pH 4.5–6.0, near-zero GH/KH) at 26–28°C — RO water mandatory. Tank: 400 L minimum; blackwater with leaf litter, submerged roots, and dark substrate; dim lighting. Feeding: Large prey items — whole fish, large prawns, earthworms; feed sparingly 2–3 times per week. Breeding: Rarely achieved; extremely large tank and perfect blackwater conditions required. Compatibility: Species tank only; no other fish safe with a large specimen.
