Nemateleotris helfrichi
Origin: Central Pacific
Nemateleotris helfrichi, Helfrich's Firefish, is widely considered the most spectacular and sought-after member of the firefish genus. Its lavender-white body transitions to a vivid canary yellow head, and both the elongated first dorsal spine and the deeply pigmented caudal fin display extraordinary electric purple and violet markings — a color combination of extraordinary rarity and intensity that makes this fish immediately recognizable as exceptional even among reef fish enthusiasts. Collected primarily from deeper water in the Central Pacific, it is rarely available and commands a significant premium. It requires the same basic care as other firefish but deserves extra attention to tank quality, feeding, and companion selection given its rarity and value.
Provide a minimum 80-liter aquarium with fine sandy areas for burrow construction and live rock retreats. Best kept as a bonded pair for mutual reinforcement and more active feeding behavior. Feed twice daily with small frozen mysis, copepods, and cyclopeeze. A tightly fitting lid with no gaps is non-negotiable — Nemateleotris firefish are fast, powerful jumpers. Maintain excellent, stable water quality. Peaceful and reef-safe with all inhabitants.
