Syncrossus helodes
Also known as: Helodes Tiger Loach, Tiger Loach, Mekong Tiger Loach
Origin: Mekong basin, Southeast Asia
Syncrossus helodes, also known as the Tiger Loach, is native to rivers of the Mekong basin across Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. It is a medium-to-large loach reaching around 22 cm, with a golden-yellow body decorated by prominent dark vertical bars and orange-tipped fins. In nature it inhabits clear, fast-flowing river channels over sand and gravel, often in deeper pools behind boulders.
In the aquarium, Syncrossus helodes exhibits the classic Botiidae temperament: social within its own group but prone to short-lived squabbles that rarely cause lasting injury. It is best housed with similarly robust species and provided ample hiding places to establish territories. A powerful external filter creating noticeable current is recommended, and the substrate should be fine sand to allow comfortable burrowing.
Feeding is uncomplicated: this species relishes frozen bloodworm, carnivore pellets, and the occasional portion of chopped prawn or earthworm. It is a long-lived fish that will become a central feature of any large Southeast Asian biotope aquarium.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–29°C, strong current, high oxygenation. Tank: 250 L minimum; fine sand, large boulder caves, minimal decoration to allow swimming space. Feeding: Carnivore sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, mysis shrimp, earthworm. Breeding: Not bred in captivity; believed to migrate to spawn. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; do not mix with small or delicate species.
