Hemichromis frempongi
Origin: West Africa (Ghana, Ivory Coast)
Hemichromis frempongi is a relatively rare West African jewel cichlid from Ghana and Ivory Coast, displaying a vivid orange-red body liberally peppered with teal iridescent spots that intensify dramatically when the fish is in breeding condition or displaying territorially. One of the most brilliantly coloured members of the genus, it rivals H. lifalili for sheer visual impact. Best managed as a bonded pair in a species tank with shelter, soft, warm water, and plenty of caves and visual barriers.
House as a bonded pair in a dedicated aquarium (minimum 120 L) with plenty of caves, driftwood, and visual barriers. Maintain pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 23–28°C, soft to moderately hard water. Feed varied omnivore foods: quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, shrimp, and earthworms. Very aggressive during breeding — pairs may need separation from even large tankmates. Regular water changes maintain health and colour intensity.
