Herichthys carpintis
Also known as: Pearlscale Cichlid, Carpintis Cichlid
Origin: Mexico (Nuevo León, Tamaulipas)
Herichthys carpintis is native to coastal river systems in Nuevo León and Tamaulipas, Mexico, where it inhabits clear to moderately turbid streams over limestone substrates. It is most famous for its extraordinary spotting pattern: dense, brilliant white to pale blue spots cover the entire body and head, creating a pearlescent effect that is especially striking in mature males.
In the aquarium hobby, H. carpintis occupies a somewhat intermediate position between the extremely common Texas Cichlid and the rarified specialist CA cichlids. It is hardy and relatively easy to maintain but displays striking coloration that elevates it beyond the average beginner species. Males develop a modest nuchal hump and display more intense coloration.
Care follows standard large cichlid protocol. The species is a dedicated digger and plant destroyer, and aquascaping must be planned with robust materials. Both parents display strong parental care during breeding.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 8–18, KH 4–12; moderately hard water natural to limestone rivers preferred. Tank: 300 L minimum; limestone rocks, sand substrate; no live plants; strong filtration. Feeding: Omnivore — quality cichlid pellets, frozen foods, earthworms; varied diet maintains pearl coloration. Breeding: Open flat-rock spawner; aggressive biparental defense; medium to large clutches. Compatibility: Large robust CA cichlids; suitable for community cichlid displays with similarly sized species.
