Herichthys tamasopoensis
Also known as: Herichthys tamasopoensis, Tamasopo Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Herichthys tamasopoensis is native to the Tamasopo river and associated springs in San Luis Potosi state, Mexico — a clear, cool, and mineral-rich habitat. Adults develop intense iridescent blue spotting on a grey-black body, resembling a particularly vivid Texas Cichlid but with a restricted endemic origin. Its spring-adapted habitat means it prefers harder, cooler water than most Central American cichlids. It is an uncommon but highly desired species among Mesoamerican cichlid collectors.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, hard water preferred (GH 12–25); spring-adapted species. Tank: 300L minimum for a pair; rocky substrate; caves and open sandy areas. Feeding: Omnivore; quality pellets, frozen foods, and occasional plant/vegetable matter. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; typical Herichthys substrate-spawning pair behaviour; active and vigorous. Compatibility: House with other robust mid-sized Central American cichlids; avoid delicate tank mates.
