Heros efasciatus
Also known as: Santarém Severum, Santarém Green Severum
Origin: South America
The Santarém locality form of Heros efasciatus originates from the confluence region near Santarém in Pará, Brazil, where the Rio Tapajós meets the Amazon. It presents a classic deep-bodied severum profile — green-gold iridescent scaling on the dorsal region transitioning to a warm reddish-gold flush on the lower flanks and belly. This form adapts relatively well to aquarium conditions compared to other wild forms and is available periodically in the trade. It thrives in soft to moderately soft, warm water and is best displayed with large driftwood and broad-leaved aquatic plants.
Water: 24–29°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft (GH 2–10). Tank: Minimum 350L; large driftwood and Echinodorus plants; moderate flow and good filtration. Feeding: Omnivore; cichlid pellets, spirulina supplement, frozen bloodworm, prawn, and cucumber. Breeding: Flat-surface spawner; both parents guard and fan eggs; fry are easy to raise on BBS. Compatibility: Peaceful with other large South American cichlids, large tetras, and armoured catfish.
