Xiphophorus maculatus var.
Also known as: Hi-Fin Wagtail Platy, Hi-Fin Platy
Origin: Captive bred (originally Mexico/Guatemala)
The Hi-Fin Wagtail Platy carries the hi-fin gene that dramatically elongates the dorsal fin into a tall, sail-like structure reminiscent of a freshwater angelfish. Combined with the wagtail gene producing black fins, the result is a particularly eye-catching platy that stands out in any community aquarium.
The enlarged dorsal fin requires slightly more careful husbandry than standard platies — fin-nipping species must be strictly avoided, and the aquarium should provide gentle rather than turbulent water flow. The fin is delicate and easily damaged.
Males are especially impressive, with the hi-fin held erect during display. This variety is a popular choice for show aquariums and livebearer enthusiasts seeking something beyond the standard platy form.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard water; avoid large temperature swings. Tank: 60 L minimum; no sharp decor; very gentle flow to protect the elongated dorsal fin. Feeding: Omnivore; varied flake, pellets, and occasional live/frozen food. Breeding: Prolific; hi-fin is sex-linked; maintain isolated from other platy varieties for strain purity. Compatibility: Peaceful but must be kept away from ALL fin-nipping species without exception.
