Cyprinus rubrofuscus (domesticated koi)
Origin: Captive bred
Hi Utsuri is a black-based koi of the Utsuri variety, with vivid red or orange-red hi markings distributed across the deep jet-black sumi base, creating a fiery, lacquer-like pattern that is among the most dramatic in the entire koi spectrum. The deep contrast between black and red demands a large, well-maintained pond with good water clarity for the colours to be fully appreciated. Hi Utsuri is regarded as one of the more challenging Utsuri varieties to develop well, as both the sumi and hi must be bold and well-balanced.
House in a well-filtered pond of at least 2,000 L with good water quality and UV sterilization. Maintain pH 7.0–8.5, temperature 5–25°C; cold-hardy through Northern European winters. Feed high-quality koi pellets with colour-enhancing ingredients to develop the depth of the red hi. Regular water changes and UV filtration maintain the contrast of the sumi pattern. Compatible with all other koi.
