Metynnis hypsauchen
Also known as: High-backed Silver Dollar, Tall Silver Dollar
Origin: Amazon basin, South America
Metynnis hypsauchen shares much of the same appeal as M. argenteus but presents a noticeably taller body profile, especially in mature males which develop a particularly elevated back and extended dorsal fin ray. The increased height makes it a visually impressive shoaling species.
Like its congeners, it is a dedicated herbivore that will systematically strip soft aquatic plants. Feeding a varied diet of green foods and spirulina-based products helps maintain health and colour. It is one of the most forgiving species in the family for beginners to large fish keeping.
Not subject to piranha restrictions.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard; adaptable and hardy within these parameters. Tank: Minimum 200L; taller tank format recommended to suit the deep body; open swimming space with robust décor. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina flake and pellets, blanched vegetables, lettuce, cucumber; offer green foods daily. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; conditionally bred in large bare tanks; males develop extended dorsal rays during breeding. Compatibility: Fully peaceful; excellent companion for large cichlids, catfish, and other serrasalmids.
